Get Your Pet Bikini-Ready–7 Easy Tips!

1) Feed your pet at regular meal times. It is better to feed 2-3 smaller meals than one big meal. Do not free-feed by leaving food out all the time unless your pet has a health condition that requires it.

2) Schedule exercise every day. If you have a dog, this is a great way for you both to exercise together and make new friends. If you have a cat, this is a way for you to bond even closer–try out new toys such as a laser or feather toy.

3) Watch the treats. Treats add up! You can still give your pet treats but use healthy options such as vegetables (e.g. baby carrots), a sliced apple or some of their daily kibble. For example, you can use some of their dry food kibble for treats but be sure to reduce the amount of kibble served at dinner. For best results, set aside a daily amount of treats in a dish so that all family members can “treat” the pet throughout the day. When the bowl is empty–that is it for the day. Remember: one average dog biscuit could be over 100 calories which is about 1/2 the amount of a small can of dog food!

4) If your pet is always hungry and you are trying to cut back, try mixing in steamed vegetables or canned pumpkin. This will help them feel more satiated and add some extra vitamins, minerals and fiber.

5) Sometimes pets beg or are excessively hungry because they are not getting enough protein in their diet. If you have a young pet, consider a grain-free commercial diet, raw frozen food or cooking some fish and adding to their regular food. Please use caution however as some pet owners have a tendency to overdo the protein and this can be life-threatening especially if the pet has a health condition such as liver or kidney disease or pancreatitis.

6) Measure foods carefully! Use a measuring cup–don’t “guesstimate” how much a standard cup is. Many scoopers are actually two cups not one.

7) Shower your pet with love–NOT FOOD! Many times people give their pets extra food as a way to show them they love them and often it is because they may feel badly they don’t spend enough time with them. Wake up a little earlier on some days or come home once a week at lunch time from work to spend some exercise or play time with your pet.

Advanced Animal Care Center was founded by Dr. Michel Selmer. Dr. Selmer is compassionate, a hands-on healer and educator who offers expert advice, products and services in the field of Integrative Veterinary Medicine; the blending of holistic and conventional medicine for the greater good of your animal. He has over fifteen years of clinical experience treating animals using a safe and highly effective healing program for the perpetuation of wellness.

Dr. Selmer specializes in the nutritional treatment of chronic diseases such as, Allergies, Arthritis, Cancer, Diabetes, Epilepsy, Heart, Liver, Bladder/Kidney Disease, Obesity, Skin and Auto-immune diseases.

We Believe in Toxic Factors

We believe that all disease including cancer, originates from inflammation resulting from; poor genetics, poor quality or toxic foods, nutritional imbalances, the over use of drugs and vaccines, environmental and house-hold poisoning and relationship stress such as well as grief and loss. These factors, referred to as “Toxic Factor Syndrome” are the main culprits contributing to immune system suppression and disease development. The proper identification of these “toxic factors”, the reduction in this “silent’ inflammation and the nutritional treatment of existing imbalances result to a pathway for healing and increased longevity.

We Can Help Your Animal

If you’re animal suffers from Toxic Factor Syndrome or any one of these diseases:

Allergies, Arthritis

Cancer, Diabetes

Epilepsy

Skin, Heart/Lung, Liver, Bladder/Kidney, Stomach/Intestines, Pancreas/Adrenal/Thyroid/Pituitary Diseases

Immune System Disorders and Auto Immune Disease

Emotional Imbalance

Ear or Eye Disorders

Obesity

Toxicity from the chronic use of drugs, vaccines and environmental poisons

Chronic Skin Disease

Dr. Selmer can help your animal detoxify, reduce inflammation, thereby setting the stage for healing. Our unique evaluation program includes your personal observations and Nutritional/Metabolic Analysis. These evaluations provide an individualized or a customized program which act as a spark plug for your animal’s body and immune system.

This program was created to offer you the opportunity to receive an individualized nutritional support program for your animal. This program is based upon treating animals holistically using diet, vitamins, minerals, herbs and homeopathy as healing modalities.

Nutritional/Metabolic Analysis

What is the NBT?

The Nutritional Blood Test is a patented blood analysis of your animal’s immune system and organ function levels used to identify existing imbalances. It is a powerful tool for the early detection of disease. The NBT evaluates existing weaknesses and imbalances that contribute to and underlie the disease process.

6 Reasons To Do An NBT

Longevity and Long Life – Your objectives of maintaining vibrant health and achieving life extension maybe realized through one simple test, the Nutritional Blood Test (NBT)

Early Detection – The test provides early detection of nutritional imbalances throughout all systems of the body. Once detected a custom nutritional powder maybe ordered and administered to correct these imbalances.

Nutritional Support for Seniors – Your animal’s aging process can be significantly slowed down through the NBT, which will nutritionally evaluate vital organs such as heart, liver and kidneys, which maybe weakening as your animals ages.

Reduced Inflammation – Diseases such as arthritis (joints), enteritis (intestines) and dermatitis (skin) are largely caused by inflammation, may be quieted and reduced thereby setting the stage for healing. If your animal suffers from any inflammatory disease, he or she will benefit from the NBT Therapy. The NBT nutritional support system as is highly effective in reducing inflammation , pain and swelling.

Reduced Obesity – Obesity is a condition caused by glandular malfunction, poor diet, weak metabolism, silent inflammation and emotional imbalances that can be corrected when the glands and metabolism are nutritionally evaluated and balanced.

Extra Support for Cancer and Chronic Conditions – The NBT test and its custom blended vitamin, mineral and antioxidants act as a powerful sparkplug if your animal suffers from a chronic disease or cancer. Regardless of the chosen medical therapy – antibiotics, cortisone, chemotherapy, radiation therapy or surgery – the NBT nutritional powder will help minimize side effects, protect organs and cells, and enhance the immune system, thereby insuring improved day-to-day quality of life.

Conditions Which Will Benefit from the NBT and Custom Protocols

Adrenal (Cushing’s or Addison’s disease), Allergies, Arthritis, Auto Immune Disease, Brain/Nerve Disease and Epilepsy, Epilepsy, Diabetes, Emotional Imbalances, Eye/Ear/Sinus Disorders, GI Disease (Stomach and Intestines), Heart, Bladder/Kidney, Liver Disease, Lung and Bronchial Disease, Mouth and Gum Disease (Periodontal Disease), Skin Disease.

What You Will Need To Do

You will need to take your animal to your veterinarian and have routine blood work drawn: Complete Blood Count (CBC), SuperChem or Complete Chemistries, Thyroid test (T4 and Free T4) and a LDH. Request a copy of your animals blood test results and fax to me. Once received, your animal will have an active patient file and the NBT process begins.

The NBT should be repeated once a year if you’re animal is healthy and less than 7 years of age. If your animal suffers from a chronic serious condition or disease the NBT should be repeated in 1 to 3 months, thereafter at the clinical discretion of Dr. Selmer.

A follow up NBT (FNBT) gives Dr. Selmer the opportunity to evaluate your animal’s healing progress. It also provides the opportunity for dosage or supplement changes to the custom blended powder. It will offer you piece of mind, because you will know exactly how your animal’s immune system is progressing and responding to the NBT nutritional therapy program.

The FNBT should be done 1 to 3 months after the initial NBT, if your animal suffers from a chronic serious condition or disease.

What To Expect

You will receive your animals results by fax, email or mail.

Read the NBT Report

Call to set up a phone consultation or to place your food and supplement order.

Food and Supplements maybe shipped same day USPS Ground unless they require special ordering, at which time they will be shipped separately.

For those who choose to think for themselves

What makes this difficult is that billions of dollars are spent to convince you, your breeder, your vet, your government (all levels), and most of your pet owning friends, that you must vaccinate your animal every year, feed only scientifically 100% balanced nutritional pet food, etc. Are you irresponsible if you do not follow the orthodox “wisdom” of caring for your animal? If you don’t follow the conventional wisdom on how to care for your pet, will you be causing harm to your animal?

The growth of interest in “natural” foods and “alternative” medicine is a sure sign that people are slowly rejecting the way we have been taught to do things.

Diet and Supplements

There simply is no commercially produced food that can substitute for a basic home prepared diet. It’s what nature intended and you know it just doesn’t pay to fool with Mother Nature.

I have been helping my patients discover a health, vitality, and joy in life that their owners never thought possible, simply by having them alter what they eat, which supplements they were given, and how they exercised. Yet I always assumed that the genetic part of our story had already been written. Like most of us, I believed the genes we inherited from our parents were the cards we were dealt. But I began to discover that we have an enormous power to improve our pet’s lives, even when it comes to their genes. True, we can’t do anything about which chromosomes they got from their parents; we can’t add new genes to the mix or eradicate old ones. But the genes they got at conception are only the beginning of the story. I believe that we have the capacity to turn up the volume on some genes and silence others with nutrition, vastly improving our capacity to provide our pet’s good health and happiness.

In this era of the Internet there is an overwhelming amount of credible and not-so-credible information. It is nearly impossible to decipher the truth from fiction. Therapeutic Nutrition is broadly defined as the use of nutrients, such as vitamins, minerals, amino acids, essential fatty acids, co-factors, enzymes, anti-oxidants, and phytonutrients, to support the body’s immune and healing systems, thereby altering the course and outcome of a disease process. It can be used as a preventative, or can be used as a therapy. It does not focus on food types, calories nor minimum daily requirements, but rather on metabolic and physiological effects of foods on the body’s healing and immune systems. Unlike drugs, nutritional products are not designed to address symptoms or diseases, they are designed to “feed” and “fuel” the cells of the body, using or calling upon the cells’ inherent ability to heal and achieve wellness. The goals of therapeutic nutrition fall within 3 broad categories, which directly help to enhance wellness.
1. The supply of appropriate absorbable nutrients
2. The reduction of inflammation
3. The enhancement of elimination of toxins
The pet food industry attempted to regulate and standardize commercially prepared pet foods. This method is based upon the chemical content and analysis of food, the actual levels of fats, proteins, carbohydrates, and moisture. The regulatory methodology is accomplished via the guaranteed analysis of the food. To qualify as a pet food, the following 4 categories must be listed on the label: crude protein, crude fat, crude fiber, and moisture. Veterinarians were able to put together a mixture containing coal, shoes, and crankcase oil. When chemically analyzed, this mixture met the minimum requirements of pet food. So, it is not only the chemical composition of pet foods that is important, but the bioavailability of the raw ingredients used.
I have affirmed that optimum nutrition helps slow the onset and progression of chronic disease because it restores balance and promotes healing by supporting the metabolic pathways that energize the healing system. In addition, it helps reduce the inflammation that predisposes an animal to disease. Its use, either alone or in combination with appropriate medication, contributes to the day-to-day wellness of the animal.

Metabolic Testing is based upon the principle that changes occur in the blood before symptoms appear. Since Metabolic Testing identifies nutrient requirements and early warning signs of impending disease, it is the perfect tool to incorporate into an animal’s health care. It provides proactive and early warning opportunities to detect and improve health through specific and tailored nutritional therapies. Clinical Analysis of the Metabolic Testing has affirmed that optimum nutrition helps slow the onset and progression of chronic disease because it restores balance and promotes healing by supporting the metabolic pathways that energize the healing system. In addition, it helps reduce the inflammation that predisposes an animal to disease. Its use, either alone or in combination with appropriate medication, contributes to the day-to-day wellness of your pet.

Vaccinations

There is a deep, ingrained belief that we must follow conventional vaccination practices to protect our animals. Unfortunately, once vaccinated there are no 100% guarantees that an animal will not contract that disease. The conventional community, including the American Veterinary Medical Association, is seriously reviewing the subject and coming to the conclusion that present practices are may be flawed.

My vaccination protocol. This is welcome news and should be taken with you to your vet should you need reinforcement against over-vaccination.

I would like to make you aware that all 27 veterinary schools in North America are in the process of changing their protocols for vaccinating dogs and cats.

Some of this information will present an ethical & economic challenge to vets, and there will be skeptics. Some organizations have come up with a political compromise suggesting vaccinations every 3 years to appease those who fear loss of income vs. those concerned about potential side effects.

Politics, traditions, or the doctor’s economic well-being should not be a factor in medical decision

Dogs’ and Cats’ immune systems mature fully at 6 months. If a modified live virus vaccine is given after 6 months of age, it most likely produces immunity, which is good for the life of the pet (ie: canine distemper, parvo, feline distemper). If another MLV vaccine is given a year later, the antibodies from the first vaccine neutralize the antigens of the second vaccine and there is little or no effect. The titer is not “boosted.”

Not only are annual boosters for parvo and distemper unnecessary, they subject the pet to potential risks of allergic reactions and immune system related diseases. There is no scientific documentation to back up label claims for annual administration of MLV vaccines.

Puppies receive antibodies through their mothers milk. This natural protection can last 8-14 weeks. Puppies & kittens should NOT be vaccinated at LESS than 8 weeks. Maternal immunity will neutralize the vaccine and little protection (0-38%) will be produced. Vaccination at 6 weeks will, however, DELAY the timing of the first highly effective vaccine. Vaccinations given less than 3 weeks apart may SUPPRESS the immune system. A series of vaccinations is given starting at 8 weeks and given 3-4 weeks apart up to 16 weeks of age. Another vaccination given sometime after 6 months of age (usually at 1 year 4 mo) will provide lifetime immunity.

Veterinary medicine

The “Western” world has produced some of the finest medicine in the world. Modern science has provided some outstanding tools for diagnostic purposes, treatment of symptoms and supportive care. Conventional medicine views the body as a mechanical device and seeks to put a label on a problem through symptomatic description. Treatment is generally by surgery, drugs or both. Veterinarians are superbly schooled in the use of these conventional modalities. What seems to have been pushed aside is the old primary rule of medicine “Firstly, do no harm.”

I have learned to question some of what I have been taught and have gone on to trying to become a “healer” in the true sense of the word. I seek to determine the underlying cause of the symptom and may use one or several modalities to support and revitalize the body’s own method of healing. Do you truly believe that we can provide you a “magic bullet” to readily cure your animals’ problems? Suppressing the symptom does not mean that a cure has been affected.

There is no substitute for fresh, wholesome food, clean water, exercise, plenty of fresh air and avoidance of chemicals and drugs to the greatest extent possible.

Holistic Medicine encompasses some of the oldest forms of medicine in the world i.e. herbs; homeopathy; glandulars; acupuncture etc. These forms of medicine are practiced predominately worldwide and exceed the use of conventional or western medicine as we know it here in North America. Science is now starting to catch up and prove the validity of many so called folk remedies. The goal is to help the body truly heal itself. Holistic therapies give us the option of choosing alternatives that can be given to help the body truly heal the condition instead of masking the symptoms as in most conventional drug therapy.

There are many such cases where holistic therapies have proven more effective, especially in cases where conventional treatments offer nothing or no hope.

Of course veterinary advice should always be sought

For those that are prone to producing bladder stones, or gravel; Couch Grass is a good herb to give in addition to aid in the dissolving of calculi or gravel. Chinese herbs are very helpful for stones as well as prevention of stones. B Vitamins should also strongly be considered. As many studies shows it has good effect in preventing stone production.

Urinary Incontinence is another common problem in spayed bitches. Unfortunately we are seeing this occur at extremely young ages. The conventional course of treatment can contribute to many side effects, especially when given on a long term basis.

There is a homeopathic remedy that was specifically formulated for this problem and when combined with a glandular nutritional supplements gives excellent results in the majority of cases and can be used long term if needed with complete safety.

Unfortunately too many animals end up with kidney or liver failure problems. This can be the result of a variety of reasons including the overuse of drug therapies; infections and aging. Conventionally speaking there is little western medicine can do other than buy a little time with fluid therapy.

Holistic medicine should certainly be turned to here as we have taken countless hopeless cases and have turned them around so that they live long and healthy lives until it is their normal time to go.

Of course each case is individual and we determine what is needed specifically from a metabolic nutritional analysis of the bloodwork. From there a protocol of glandulars; homeopathics and herbs are given.

It is important to realize that base line bloodwork should be done at least starting at middle age as a preventative measure.

Unfortunately since conventional medicine offers no treatment for degenerative liver and kidney problems most often initial signs that show up in blood panels are passed over or ignored as not to alarm the owner. “This is part of regular aging, etc.”

Please, ask your vet when any bloodwork is done for copies for your own records; then ask him how the liver and kidney functions are and compare them to previous levels. If there are any signs of deterioration, then certainly know that you have options and can make the choice to intervene! Certainly the earlier the diagnosis the easier it is to treat.

OCD, (basically a bone chip or a piece of ossified cartilage that has come loose to cause irritation and lameness) is another common condition which the only course of treatment is surgery, with usually varied results of success depending on the location. OCD has been responding with excellent results to natural therapy!

Heart conditions also respond well with holistic care, alone or as an adjunct to conventional drug treatment.

We are on the forefront of a very exciting era. The reawakening of true healing. Accepting and utilizing methods from around the world all with one goal in mind- to help the body heal itself. Do no harm!

Can brain tumor in dog be caused by bad diet?

Can what you feed your dog predispose him to a brain tumor? According to the veterinarian whom I asked this question to, it’s possible that diet can be part of the multifactorial process that can increase brain tumor risk in dogs.

My parents’ dog was diagnosed with a brain tumor at the age of 8 years and 10 months. And I thought, Dammit, I just knew it; I knew what they were feeding him would eventually cause something like this. One of the diagnosing veterinary neurologist’s assistants told my mother, “There was nothing you could have done to prevent the tumor,” after she asked what could have caused it.

Is it remotely possible that bad diet can cause a brain tumor in dogs? I posed this question to Dr. Michel Selmer, DVM, of Advanced Animal Care Center in Huntington, NY. He is not treating my parents’ dog, but he is my expert source for some of my dog health articles on this site.

Dr. Selmer’s response begins, “I believe that certain foods, additives, preservatives, processing agents, etc., can lead to an increase in incidence of cancer in general. I agree with you about your ‘pulling the trigger’ theory.”

My “pulling the trigger” theory is actually a commonly accepted theory in the world of genetic research: Genetics loads the gun, but environment pulls the trigger. Many dogs are fed a bad diet; the vast majority of dogs are fed a diet that does NOT mimic the diet that nature designed dogs to consume; yet most 8 year old dogs do not have cancer.

I’m supposing that a combination of what my parents fed their German shepherd for eight years, and “bad genes,” led to the brain tumor. Purebred dogs are more likely to get cancer than mixed breeds. It’s no secret that some purebred canines come from a line of inbreeding.

Dr. Selmer continues, “You may not realize it, but you and your pet have spent your lives altering your genetic activity. When you took your first sip of wine or beer, you turned up the volume on your body’s genetic ability to detoxify alcohol. Every summer, when you strive for that perfect tan, you activate the genes that protect your skin. Genes are not a fixed set of preprogrammed instructions. They are a dynamic, active part of your pet’s life, responding each day to the environment and their diet. Diet and the environment have the capacity to turn up the volume on some genes and silence others, vastly changing our health.”

From day one, I warned my mother about the possible harm of feeding the dog certain foods, namely processed meats, gravies from a can, and pancakes, waffles, potato chips, mashed potatoes from a box, and French fries, to name a few. I never told her or my father (whom I’ve witnessed feeding the dog apple butter on white bread) that these food choices could cause cancer, let alone a brain tumor.

Instead, I harped on the idea of general health and longevity, as well as weight control. My brother kept telling my mother to stop feeding the dog anything with grains, including pasta. Dogs should not eat grains! Grains suppress the immune system of dogs! In addition to the “human food,” the dog was fed standard dog food from a bag, plus doggie “cookies.”

A second veterinarian (an alternative practitioner) is now treating my parents’ dog. He told us, “If the immune system works, you won’t get cancer.”

I can’t help but wonder: Had my parents avoided feeding their dog anything that was processed – and that includes “dog food,” would the brain tumor still have developed?

That dog was also fed cereal, which, contrary to what the giant cereal companies have been advertising for years, is one of the worst things people can eat (with the exception of a very tiny percentage of minimally processed, whole grain cereals); many kinds of cereals are high in acrylamide, which was recognized in 2005 by the FDA to be a carcinogen, formed from the heating process used to make starchy foods. Many cereals are loaded with sugar, such as high fructose corn syrup.

“A little bit won’t hurt him,” was my parents’ mantra regarding processed food. Dogs’ bodies were not designed by nature to accept with open arms processed foods. Think of what dogs in the wild eat, what they have evolved over hundreds of centuries to eat: food in its natural state – raw! This includes vegetation; dogs are omnivores.

Toxins from processed foods and conventionally raised meats (manmade sugars, artificial colors and flavorings, preservatives, miscellaneous carcinogens, pesticides, hormones, antibiotics) accumulate in dogs. The day after you feed your pet junk does not begin at ground zero; instead, it’s an add-on to previous junk feedings!

I’ve never told my parents, and don’t intend to, that I think the dog’s brain tumor could have been prevented, indeed, with a diet absent of processed “human food.” I suspect that the incidence of brain tumors in dogs would be drastically reduced if dogs were fed a diet limited to raw meat from wild game or grass-fed livestock, plus organic vegetables and fruits. Keep in mind that some “healthy” foods are toxic to dogs, such as grapes, raisins, onions, cocoa, mushrooms and macadamia nuts.

10 Foods Never to Feed Dog with Sensitive Stomach

Dog have sensitive stomach? Avoid these foods.

“Sensitive stomachs in dogs can result from food intolerance,” says Dr. Michel Selmer, DVM, of Advanced Animal Care Center in Huntington, NY. You’ve probably read about what foods to give a dog that has a sensitive stomach. However, it also helps to know what foods never to feed a dog that has a sensitive stomach.

According to Dr. Selmer, here are at least 10 food items that you should never give a dog that has a sensitive stomach. In fact, don’t give any canine these foods.

High fat foods. They are “difficult to digest and can cause inflammation of the pancreas,” says Dr. Selmer. There are two exceptions to this rule: ground beef and peanut butter. However, you should still choose a lower-fat beef.

Chocolate. Dogs cannot metabolize a compound in chocolate called theobromine. Chocolate, so heavenly to people, can cause seizures in dogs.

Coffee and tea. These are as bad for canines as is chocolate.

Raisins and grapes; can cause kidney failure.

Nutmeg; can cause seizures.

Raw eggs. Avoid giving these to your dog, as they can contain salmonella.

Onions. Dr. Selmer says these “are not advised, as they can interfere with blood circulation.”

Macadamia nuts; “can cause dogs to have tremors and lead to paralysis.”

Dr. Selmer continues, “Other food cautions include moldy foods, yeast dough and fruit pits. Many fruit pits contain cyanide.”

If you suspect your dog has a sensitive stomach, or if your pet has been diagnosed as having a sensitive stomach, Dr. Selmer explains:

“Food intolerances can result from dyes, preservatives, contaminants or even natural proteins in the food. The solution for these intolerances is the feeding of a ‘pure’ diet, ideally a home-cooked food made with carbohydrates and proteins that are novel or new to the patient. Recently a new approach has been introduced using therapeutic diets made from hydrolyzed proteins. This means that a conventional protein source is used but the protein is broken down into molecules too small to excite the immune system.”

Examples of home-cooked foods made with carbohydrates that dogs with sensitive stomachs will benefit from:

Rice. “Rice is a good carbohydrate for dogs. Brown rice is preferable, as it has more nutrients.”

Brewers yeast

Flour (e.g. soy flour)

Cod liver oil or flaxseed; “in small amounts adds omega 3 and helps keep their coats shiny.”

Garlic; “can help get rid of tape worms and fleas as well as fight infection; caution, as large amounts can cause illness in dogs.”

Meats. Liver, beef, tuna, lamb or chicken. “It’s easier to add to food if the meat is ground.”

Dr. Selmer adds, “Dogs also enjoy peanut butter, and biscuits can be made with them by adding flour, bone meal and/or powdered milk, brewers yeast and even carrots. Peanuts are one of the few nuts that are safe for your dog.”

He endorses carrots, broccoli and spinach, “but they need to be put through a food processor first to aid in digestion. (Broccoli is not good in large amounts.)”

Finally, add bone meal for calcium. “Raw meaty bones are a good source of calcium. Powdered milk is also a popular ingredient in dog food.”

Follow these guidelines as to what never to feed a dog with a sensitive stomach, and what to feed your pet.

A Natural Approach To Your Pet’s Care

The Power to Alter Your Pet’s Genes’ Behavior

You may not realize it, but you and your pet have spent your lives altering your genetic activity.

”Naturopathy” or “Nutrigenomics” addresses your pet’s individual needs and works with their body to help maintain good health. Each pet has different problems and considerations, which is why each pet needs its own specifically individualized dietary supplementation.

Dr. Michel Selmer, has been helping his patients discover a health, vitality, and joy in life that their owner’s never thought possible, simply by having them alter what they eat, which supplements they were given, and how they exercised. Yet he always assumed that the genetic part of our story had already been written. Like most of us, he believed the genes we inherited from our parents were the cards we were dealt. But recently, Dr. Selmer began to discover that we have an enormous power to improve our pet’s lives, even when it comes to their genes. True, we can’t do anything about which chromosomes they got from their parents; we can’t add new genes to the mix or eradicate old ones. But the genes they got at conception are only the beginning of the story. Dr. Selmer belives that we have the capacity to turn up the volume on some genes and silence others, vastly improving our capacity to provide our pet’s good health and happiness.

What is a Nutritional Blood Test?

The Nutritional Blood Test, or NBT, is a diagnostic tool used by Dr. Selmer who recognizes the importance of integrating nutrition with patient care. The NBT assesses the health of internal organs and the available vitamins, minerals and enzymes required for the metabolic processes. Using blood results and medical history, the NBT prioritizes the nutrients required to help optimize organ function and balance metabolism.

It then matches the results to specific Nutraceuticals that support a clinical response. The NBT nutritional therapy is adjunctive to your other methods of treatment. In addition, the supplements that comprise the NBT Nutraceutical Therapy can help improve chronic conditions and support the healing process. Even if the patient is already using supplements, the NBT enhances the ability to dispense them effectively.

The NBT is not meant to diagnose a particular disease, recommend medical therapy or replace current diagnostic protocols. The NBT nutritional therapy is adjunctive to other methods of treatment. In addition, the supplements that comprise the NBT Nutraceutical Therapy can help improve chronic conditions and support the healing process even if you’re already using supplements for your animal.

How Does the NBT Work?

The levels of certain chemicals in the blood are the end result of the metabolic processes and the utilization or excretion of the metabolic wastes from the body. The NBT looks beyond chemical testing and quantitative assays to identify imbalances that are due to poor nutrient absorption, utilization or metabolism. One contributing factor to the reported steady rise in chronic degenerative diseases in animals is the inadequate levels of vitamins, minerals, enzymes and vital nutrients found in many highly processed, commercially prepared foods. Over time, the animal’s nutrient reserves can become depleted, paving the way to disease. The NBT is a valuable tool for correcting these deficiencies and guiding sick animals back to health.

The Optimum Range

Within the normal blood reference range, there are subtle gradations of tissue integrity and organ efficiency that can be measured. The NBT assessment relies on an Optimum Range, an additional set of parameters that are narrower than the traditional reference range and in which organs and metabolic processes are functioning at peak efficiency. Results outside of the optimum range do not necessarily indicate disease. They do, however, indicate that a particular organ system is not functioning at optimal efficiency, and may require nutritional support. Just as the interpretation outside the normal range forms the basis for the diagnosis of a specific disease, the optimum range interpretation forms the basis for determining optimal- not just “passable”- health. The NBT compares the blood results to the optimum range. When a value falls outside of the optimum range, the underlying physiology and metabolism, as well as the specific glands involved and nutrients used by the body for these processes, are assessed. The assessment is further evaluated in combination with the diagnosis and the clinical signs, resulting in a recommended NBT Nutraceutical Program that is specific to your animal.

The Results of the NBT

The NBT provides a unique veterinary-client lab report that prescribes the most effective combination of nutrients including vitamins, minerals, enzymes, and raw glandulars, specifically blended to match the imbalances found in the animal’s blood. These nutrients are precisely dosed according to the animal’s weight and the severity of the imbalances or deficiencies The nutrient combination, referred to as the NBT Nutraceutical Therapy, is given orally in an easy-to-use powder along with symptom-oriented liquid remedies. In the powdered form, the designated number of “scoopfuls” is simply mixed with the animal’s food. Liquids are given orally, separate from the food. All remedies are custom-prescribed and individually labeled.

Advantages of Using Custom Blended Powder and Liquid Formulas Palatable

Easy to Administer

Dosed By Weight Of Animal

Therapeutic Nutrition

The goals of therapeutic nutrition fall within 3 broad categories, which directly help to enhance wellness.
ü The supply of appropriate, bioavailable nutrients
ü The reduction of inflammation
ü The enhancement of elimination of toxins
The pet food industry attempted to regulate and standardize commercially prepared pet foods. This method is based upon the chemical content and analysis of food, the actual levels of fats, proteins, carbohydrates, and moisture. The regulatory methodology is accomplished via the guaranteed analysis of the food. To qualify as a pet food, the following 4 categories must be listed on the label : crude protein, crude fat, crude fiber, and moisture. Veterinarians were able to put together a mixture containing coal, shoes, and crankcase oil. When chemically analyzed, this mixture met the minimum requirements of pet food. So, it is not only the chemical composition of pet foods that is important, but the bioavailability of the raw ingredients used.
Dr. Selmer has affirmed that optimum nutrition helps slow the onset and progression of chronic disease because it restores balance and promotes healing by supporting the metabolic pathways that energize the healing system. In addition, it helps reduce the inflammation that predisposes an animal to disease. Its use, either alone or in combination with appropriate medication, contributes to the day-to-day wellness of the animal.
